4:49 pm - I'm giving a talk tomorrow
Starting tomorrow (Friday) and for the next two Fridays following, I will be participating in the ACTLab Lecture Series. I will be giving tag team talks with my colleagues on what's going on in the world of the Internet.

This week the topic is:

Music, TV and Film on the Internet
Have you ever wondered how the media landscape washed into the Internet Sea? In this lecture/seminar we will look at the current state of MTF on the Internet and how technology is changing the way industry, consumers and content creators deal with distribution and consumption.

I will be covering the top ten things happening right now that you should know about.

Friday, April 4th, 6:30pm in the ACTLab, CMB Studio 4B on the UT campus on Dean Keaton and Guadalupe, across from Madam Mam's. There is a pay parking lot next to Madam Mam's and a garage behind that.

I hope to see you there!

6:30 pm - I'm Coming to Austin!
I'll be in Austin, not this weekend but the next.

If you want to hang out, you some come to my sweet workshop on making solar LED lights.
I'm not totally sure how we're going to make them. That's why we're having a workshop!!! We'll figure it out together.

This is pretty much the happening event. Everyone cool is going to be there. I'm going to take all the solar lights I make to FP XII, so if you're going to FP XII then that's even more reason to come.

9:14 pm - A Fine Day (In San Francisco)
I awoke this morning to the sound of my phone. It was Liza and she and Steve wanted to go to brunch at Magnolia. I love brunch at Magnolia! However, I do not love getting out of bed. Luckily, I had plenty of time while Steve and Liza got ready to go out. I called Aimy because I said I'd call her as soon as I woke up. She was also in bed and people were trying to get her to go eat, but in solidarity we stayed cozy. Eventually we both left the bed to go out to eat. I love Magnolia. I had the museli, which is what I always get, and which was extra delicious today. Then we went across the street to Coffee to the People. Steve and I were talking about programming language design and then about whether you could have something like a snowboard but for the streets, since snowboarding season is over.

Then Steve went to get a haircut and Liza went to the tiny toast store (also specializing in unfinished furniture and milk paint) and I stayed to research street snowboards (known as freebords). We met up later and went to Thai lunch. Then I talked Steve into my crazy plan. I reserved a Mini Cooper Zipcar and we got in it and drove to Santa Rosa to the Freebord store. We bought some Freebords and took them back to Steve's to tear up the mean streets of the north Panhandle neighborhood. I can't believe they went for it! It was so spontaneous and fun.

Now we're back at Steve's and I'm drinking a 40 of iced tea and Steve is making Boca burgers. Liza gave me some freeze-dried Malaysian rambutan fruit snacks and has at this point entirely covered me in rose petals from the roses that are randomly delivered to her because Steve signed up for an online service which randomly delivers flowers to his girlfriend at unexpected intervals. I called Aimy to tell her and she said that I was "SO San Francisco right now". She had gone dumpster diving with some guy from Food Not Bombs and was heading to a coop party, so that makes her SOOO Austin right now!!

Tomorrow I hope we're going to go to Golden Gate Park because they close it off to cars on Sunday and there's a hill that goes three miles down to the ocean.

8:08 am - Sunny Austin
Hello everyone! I am in sunny Austin for SXSW. It has been a whirlwind for a trip, but I am only attending Interactive, so I'm done conferencing for the week. If anybody wants to hang today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday?) I have to work during the day, but I'm free in the evenings. I think I might take some people in town from BT out for beers tonight. They are Californians and do not know the joys of Austin. We'll probably go to the Ginger Man as Opal Divine's is usually a SXSW music venue and therefore inaccessible.

I know some people are pissed at me because I didn't tell anyone I was coming to town and I haven't called anyone. What can I say? I'm in town for work, so I had to work. It's fine if you want to be pissed at me, and it's also fine if you want to hang out now that I'm done conferencing, but you should choose which one you want to do because I don't really want to hang out with people that are pissed at me. I mean, we could do that, but would it be fun and awesome?

The best Valentine's Day ever. No jocks, no jerks, just fun with girls. (well a girl. and a dude. I'm speaking of Steve and Liza. They take me under their wing when the world abandons me. And I am a charming date.) The lady at the flower store gave me a gerber daisy for free because it had a petal missing. I missed the pillow fight. We were in the subway and there was just this stream of total hotties, no boyfriend in sight, covered in feathers. I am an idiot. But there you have it. Annie Hall was wonderful. (They break up. Spoiler alert. Oops, too late.) I bought from Steve a guitar from Paris. I ended up having to walk home at 1am with a laptop, a guitar, and a flower in a vase. Steve said it was a very San Francisco moment.

On Friday I went to see The Octopus Project with Nick from work and then Liza decided to go and then Steve met us there and it was like omg I have friends and they do stuff with me! The opening bands were terrible and this guy urinated on this other guy and there was this big scene and there were all of these hippies on E trying to groove and it pretty much would have sucked except I was with my friends and we made it fun. Oh yeah and then The Octopus Project played. They are so much better than like every other band ever. I mean, that's just want I want music to be, you know? There's no point in me starting a band because there's already The Octopus Project. I'm just kidding, we can still start a band... an Octopus Project cover band! Word.

This weekend was pretty lame actually. I would be lonely so I'd go out. Then I'd remember that I hate people and go home. Then I'd be lonely again. I need some place to go that isn't loud and filled with crazy and drunk people. But I live in the Haight, you know? It's just... I'm such a monk. I need a mountain top with a DSL connection. And people should climb up there and ask me questions about DHT theory. I'd give them tea and answers.

I have tomorrow off and no good plans for it. I don't want to waste another day lounging in my apartment of being annoyed with humanity in a coffee shop. I need to like go to the beach or something. Except I hate sand... I'm such a mess. Somebody save me. But not past my expiration date, or I will start to smell.

5:36 pm - Flipside
My dears! You must buy your Flipside tickets now! Buy them now so that we can all be happy together and remember what life is for. You have until the end of the week to buy them. You can buy 2 per person. They are $65 each. It's totally worth it for this almost week-long camping extravaganza with art, beauty, fun, and the people you love most in the world (i.e. me). They event is May 24-28. If you want to hang out with me in May then this is the place to be! If you get in now, maybe we can have a super-fun camp together!! If none of you are coming, then I'll try to join the second most super-fun camp, Ish. (second only to the extra-super-fun camp that we could make if you all came to Flipside with me this year!!!) Think about it. But don't think too long because there's not a lot of time to get tickets! Trust me, this is the most fun of the year. It's totally worth it.

Buy them here: http://www.burningflipside.com/index_html#Tickets

7:12 pm - Funeral
Last year I went to my first ever funeral, and then my second like a week later. Since then I've been thinking about what I'd want my funeral to be like. Over the holidays my friend Christine was talking about officiating funerals and since then I've been thinking a lot about the particulars of ideal funeral. Maybe this is not as fun and interesting of a topic for you as it is for me, so I'll cut it to spare you.

It is New Year's Eve, my gentle readers. I am having a party. It's in the usual place, so call or e-mail me if you need directions. It's at 8pm and everyone is welcome to spend the night. There will be vegetarian chili and midnight french toast. Bring a towel, and maybe a pillow, and of course any snacks and drinks you want. See you there!

3:45 am - Friscing
I went friscing in Upper Haight with Steve and Liza. Liza made me get a shirt that makes me look like a cowboy. It has snap-buttons and stripes and everything. I also got some fashionable designer blue jeans.

I wore my new outfit to the Panda and Angel show tonight. I was even so bold as to go out without my hoodie, so I was unable to hide from the world, even on the bus. What a world of difference a new shirt makes! San Franciscans recognized me as one of their own. They were friendly and struck up conversations. Girls at the club were checking me out, I kid you not. It was awesome.

The Panda and Angel show was fantastic. The first opening band, Matt and Kim, was very cute synthpop. I think Aimy would have appreciated their lovable demeanor and danceable songs. (check them out, they are so cute) The second band was two people from Panda and Angel and a different guitar/vocalist girl. She sang good lesbian angst songs. They were called S. I bought their album, "Puking and Crying" and I am pretty excited. Panda and Angel totally rocked it. I love them so much.

I think I kind of like San Francisco a bit now. It's a good place to be alone. Much like Austin, there's only one place to see shows. Here it's Bottom of the Hill. It's better than Emo's though. It's smaller and there's no like backstage. So when you're hanging out after the show, you're hanging out with the band. It's very relaxed and pleasant. You can't sort out the hipsters from the band members because they all look the same.

Waiting for the bus at the bottom of the hill is still the loneliest thing ever. I wrote a poem about it last time I was their (I have a poem about every neighborhood in San Francisco). I would tell it to you, but I've already forgotten it.

This is a good place to be at this point in my life. I'm dealing with a lot of things in my mind right now and it's nice to have all this space to deal with them. But I don't want to grow old and die alone here. We'll see how long I can take it out here. It will be interesting.

11:23 pm - Tension and Fame's Our Career
Dearest readers, I am investigating a new haircut. Having had the same haircut for so long, I really don't know what the options are. The problem with my hair is that if it's shorter, it will "fro up" as Liza says. What cute haircuts do men with curly hair have? Please post or e-mail me pictures of cute haircuts that you think I should get. Feel free to bias your choices towards what you would most like me to have as I trust your taste to be better than mine. Thanks readers! You're the best!

1:22 am - Birthday Party!

Do  you wander what I've been up to? Did I drop off the face of your earth? Not return your phone calls or e-mail?

Well! Now you have the chance to catch up! My entirely fabulous birthday party will be this weekend, Saturday November 11th at the usual place and the usual time. Now is your chance to see me before I disappear again.

The party theme this year is: Canada. Make of it what you will.

There are more details to come, but for now I just wanted to get this exciting event on your calendar.

1:48 am - clouds, flowers, Margaret
I saw Margaret today! We talked about Margaret. This was good, because I have a lot of things to say on the subject. I have a lot of intimidating lists of items at the moment and so Margaret started a new list: pretty things that I like. So far it contains: clouds, flowers, Margaret. I walked her home and she got her guitar and we walked around until we found a stretch of grass kind of far away from houses (it was late and people were sleeping) and she sang me songs she wrote about boys. They were really beautiful and sad. I think one of her songs is the saddest song in the world. I think it's sadder than "100,000 Fireflies". I feel a lot better about life. Austin is better when Margaret is in Austin.

1:02 pm - Clothing Triage Fantasticos and Emaculate Return
In preparation for my departure to seek my fortune on the frontier, I am going to be sorting through all of my clothes and dividing them into keep, discard, and give away. If you want any of my clothes or have an opinion on what I should be wearing for the next few years, now is your time to get in on the action. Also, if I have your clothes and you want them back, you have no chance to survive make your time.

Additionally, if I have any other stuff of yours that you want back, now is the time to come get it. Chances are I have books, DVDs, and delicious snacks that belong to you. I ate the snacks, but you can have the rest back.

The Clothing Triage Fantasticos and Emaculate Return will be occurring on this Wednesday, September 27th in our year of the lord 2006. at say, I dunno, 5pm. You're welcome to come by anytime during the day or night, really, and hang out and eat popsicles.

1:54 am - Doubt will be the fire of your delight
What a week. When there is too much at once, it's like a dream. I went to the Grand Canyon once and it looked like a postcard of the Grand Canyon. My eyes couldn't understand something so vast, so they picked the closest thing they could handle, a picture of infinity. I'm listening to a mix right now that I found in a pile of CDs that fell off of my CD rack earlier. I made it for Heather in 2004 and it's called "Speeding into Darkness". I think about the world then and I wonder how I got to where I am now. It's incomprehensible, the number of happenings and decidings, catastrophes and crises now resolved or forgotten. So much happens in every single day. My life goals now seem so naive. On the other hand, that's what you have to do. Life isn't going to suddenly reveal all of its mysteries the day that you give up. The funny thing about this mix I'm listening to is that it's excellent, but I don't have the track listing and I don't remember any of these songs or bands. It's as if I made a mix for my future self. Thanks Brandon, you're like my best friend.

Valerie came over today to work on recovering my couch. It's about half done and I think it looks great. Rachel came over too and made a scarf from a painting I have on my wall. It looks exactly like the scarf in the painting, too. I decided to cook a delicious three course meal for no particular reason. We had pasta with a basil-tomato sauce made from fresh heirloom tomatoes. I've never made tomato sauce from scratch before, so that was fun. We also had fresh rapini (a green, kind of like mustard greens, kind of like broccoli) with balsamic vinegar. For desert we had broiled figs with gorgonzola and honey. It was all very delicious. There are some disadvantages to attention deficit, but on the other hand, I rarely find people with attention surplus that can cook all three courses of a three course meal at the same time while simultaneously cleaning up and changing the music whenever it's not awesome. I'm not saying I'm super-cool or anything. I mean, I can't drive anywhere without getting lost and I can't mail things. I'm just saying that there's a tradeoff.

If you missed my radio show but were for some reason interested in hearing it, you can download it.

I'm just happy to be alive and dancing in my apartment to BT and Mike Doughty doing "Never Gonna Come Back Down". I have all the popsicles I can eat. It's 3am and I have nothing I have to do tomorrow but look slick all day. Maybe I'll stay up all night drawing. Maybe I'll turn my phone off tomorrow and spend the day in the bookstore, read McSweeney's and Goodnight Moon, see what's up in sustainable architecture.

current music: Right on to all them English girls named Charisse
